Whilst it was only 1967, the music within offered a direction to many. Of course, no one knew it at the time, but if an LP transcended the jangly, pop, lyrically clear and clean 60’s with that grungier, heavier 70’s, then this surely was a contender.
The first thing you notice is the clarity of the production. Remember it’s 1967 and whilst the Beatles were experimenting, in more ways than one, this was a rock and roll band and the recording is worthy of anything from that era. Which allows you to enjoy each track that little bit more. Self penned tracks are mixed in with covers from Bo Diddley, Albert Hammond and others. But somehow they all blend together really well.
As you can probably tell, I really, really like this. And an added bonus, not untypical from covers back in the day, there is a fabulous storyboard on the back cover penned by Keith Altham from the NME. Bands have struggled with their ‘difficult’ second LP over the year but not this one. It is worthy of it’s place in history. Whether it’s a reminder of the house-parties of yesteryear or simply a reminder of the music around at the time, this is well worth a place in anyone’s collection. Fabulous…
