This is solid proof that you don’t need much more than a talented songwriter, some lovely harmonies and, presumably, a mate to knock out some simple, unencumbered music. With song titles such as ‘My father’s room’ ‘Simple song’ and ‘The story’ you can probably imagine that the songs are heartfelt, personal and with meaning. No ‘Ballroom Blitz’ or ‘Get it on’ likely to be found on here.
Not quite a golden hits LP, this is a collection of songs previously recorded and differ from their originals along the way. Actually I like this idea. Songs evolve, artists learn along the way, arrangements which were once battlegrounds can be revisited and improved upon. And if you don’t like the new version, there is always the old one to fall back on.
It’s a solid collection of songs, which demand listening to, as do many folk inspired collections. They demand a bit of your time, it’s a talent to write them and as such you feel you need to payback the writer. Each song, I think all self-penned, is simply there to be listened to and I could not find a weakness. There is nowhere to hide on this recording. It’s simple, effective, beautifully crafted and I challenge you to put it away after a single listen. Outstanding.
