This will take you all over the isle. By his own admittance this offering didn’t have too much direction, and whilst that may have mattered at the time to the artist, to the listener many years later I’m not sure it does. A personal favourite on Side 1 is Track 2, January man. What a simple, but breath-taking offering. How could anyone ever get tired of listening to a gem such as this?
I think it’s fair to say this LP was Christy finding his way once more after his stint in Planxty. It was recoded as a result of a short residency with his band at the Meeting Place and kick started his renewed presence back in Ireland. Over the years he has thrown himself into supporting a variety of political battles across the globe. Sometimes I feel musicians and artists would be better versed by making that step forward formally into the political arena. The youth of this world are more likely to follow and listen to those we bond with, rather than the faceless politicians we end up with. But that takes us away from the music.
An eclectic range of tracks. Perhaps not Moore’s strongest offering but there are some gems on here and the quality of the vinyl is excellent having benefitted from being cleaned by the excellent VPI cleaning machine. A good solid addition to anyone’s collection especially if you want to extend a toe in the direction of what Ireland does best.
