I’ve written before saying I hate pigeon holing music. So I find with great delight, after listening to Side 1 that even the most accomplished music journalist seeking his way in the world with a first from Oxford would be challenged to put a wrap around the songs on Side 1. Individualistic is the shortened form of summarising what is on offer.
Slightly confusingly, but not so much that would keep anyone awake, the song credits on the cover list Side 2 over Side 1. But not the words inside, which by the way, is a lovely layout and portrayal of showcasing lyrics on an LP. Many could learn from it and it rather overshadows the outer cover in terms of imagination.
He is recognised by many of his peers as a fabulous musician but one who has swung under the radar over the years, not perhaps receiving the adulation or prominence that he undoubtedly deserves. The testimonials from Tom Petty; Pete Townsend; Steve Winwood; BB King; Joe Walsh and many others are worth a read in themselves. Producer, guitarist, vocalist, A&R man (after leaving BS&T) and organ player of immense talent, his peers certainly recognise his contribution and advice from many an angle. And much of his talent is portrayed on his fine LP.
As Gene Simmons is on record as saying ‘I've always thought of Al as one of the unsung heroes rock'n roll. A guy that's always lived in the shadows and has never really gotten his due’. Listen here and find out what he had to offer.
