….And you will find that not only are the vocals extraordinary, it’s a stonking track in its’ own right. One of the most identifiable and fondly remembered bands from the late 60’s and early 70’s Fairport Convention successfully bridged that gap, often gaping wide, between the world of folk and that of popular culture. It’s not an easy bridge to cross and for that we must thank not only Ms. Denny but some of the foremost gifted musicians who passed through the ranks of FC in those early years.
This recording preceded probably one of their more famous offering (Liege and Lief), released just 6 months later. Sadly between releases, their drummer on this LP, Martin Lamble, together with Richard Thomson’s girlfriend, died in a car accident in August. Tragedy wasn’t too far away from this band and other members left shortly after the end of ’69.
But this is a fine memory to those original members. There are some brilliant songs on here and whilst not all were penned by the band, there is a soul touching, poignant undertone offered by ‘Who knows where the time goes’. Sadly, epitomising the struggles of Sandy Denny I suspect it’s a reminder to many of us. Enjoy these magical moments when they come along. At least with this you can easily transport yourself back to a joyous moment in time.
